Biography

1965 :

November 15th : Birth of Bassirou Sidy N’Diaye – alias Bass in a wolof senegalese royal family

 

1972 – 1978 :

- Primary studies in Dakar

- Bass shows his first signs of artistic abilities in drawings

 

1978 – 1985 :

- Secondary studies at Jean de la Fontaine school in Dakar

Bass is passionate of music. Since he’s a descendant of a royal family, he does not dare to infringe the rules consisting in having his father prohibiting him to become a professional musician.

-At the end of his secondary cycle, Bass does his first drawings on paper and decides to specialize in the “fixe under glass” (souwere) technics

 

1998 :

- May : Bass holds an exhibition at the “Biennal of Comtemporary African Art “Dak’art’ at the French Cultural Center of Dakar and then, for the 1st time, abroad at “the Green Street Gallery of New York” (USA)

 

1999 :

Bass moves to abstract and creates numerous series out of which the collection “ Voyages nocturnes” and tries his skills at “naïve painting”

-      June : Exhibition at the Marie Claire Mwanza Gallery in Brussels (Belgium)

-      July : Exhibition “Afrique chez vous” in Limoges (France)

 

2000 :

-      May : Biennal exhibition of African Art , Dak’Art – Place de l’Obelisque – Dakar

 

2002 :

-      May : Biennal of comtemporary African Art - Dak’Art – Place de l’Obelisque – Dakar

 

2003 :

-     June : Bass arrives in France and lives in Paris

      He discovers France with its landscapes, Paris and its museums. He is fascinated by Rodin and above all by Camille Claudel and Nicolas de Staël

-      Summer time : Trip back to Dakar. His creation is expanding and he does a lot of works on various materials : glass, canvas, paper (watercolours); he also tests new materials such as fabrics

-      September : Bass returns to Paris

-      November : Participation in the “ 20th artist trade fair of the 15th arrondissement” – Paris

-      December : Exhibition at the Library “Art and Litterature” – Paris

 

2004 :

January 14th : Death of Bass in Dakar

            - January/February : exhibition at the Agbe and Gbalicam Gallery in Paris
